Designer Bio
Jean Prouvé
(1901-1984)

Jean Prouvé was one of the influential designers of the 20th century. Yet outside of France, only a relatively small circle is familiar with his oeuvre. Prouvé began as a metal craftsman in Paris, and opened his own smithy in Nancy in 1923 where he produced his first furniture made of thin sheet steel. In the early 1940s, he began working more with wood, due to the scarcity of steel during World War II. Besides creating furniture, Prouvé also explored designs for pre-fabricated housing and designed and constructed dwellings for the homeless. Although there have been a few re-editions of his furniture, Prouvé's designs have never received the attention they undoubtedly deserve.
