Finlandia Vase
Alvar Aalto, 1936
The word aalto is Finnish for "wave," and in the 1930s Aalto captured the eternal wave in his classic series of vases. With a sensual and flowing form, they seem to mimic the water they hold. He integrated the natural contours of the Finnish landscape into his free-form vase series. This edition, inspired by one introduced at the 1936 Paris World's Fair, is taller and narrower than the classic Aalto vase and allows for easy flower arranging. The new Flaming Red edition of the Aalto series recalls the ruby red glass the designer utilized in creating the Aalto Flower for the 1939 World's Fair. Each lead-free crystal piece is mouth-blown into a mold and hand-polished. Made by Iittala. Hand-wash only.
