Miniature Chair, Wiggle Chair
Frank Gehry, 1972
Faithfully reproduced from the full-size originals, these precise miniatures replicate important chairs in the development of twentieth-century furniture design, many of which are now in the Museum's design collection. The miniatures, developed by the Vitra Design Museum in Germany, are now sought-after collectibles. Each is meticulously crafted in the original materials at a scale of 1:6, including miniature screws. Packed in a wooden "shipping crate" with a descriptive brochure. Exploring the building potential of corrugated cardboard, architect Frank Gehry glued sections together in right-angled layers. He called the resulting material "edgeboard," and cut it like sculpture. This led to his ground-breaking series of stable cardboard furniture, named Easy Edges, which includes the Wiggle Side Chair.
