Richard Sapper
(b. 1932)
Born in Munich, Mr. Sapper has worked largely in his native Germany. He did not attend the usual schools of industrial design, but his studies instead ranged from philosophy, engineering and graphics to anatomy. His design career began in 1958 in Milan, and he is now strongly associated with postwar Italian design-successfully combining its sensual qualities with German precision. Always interested in creating technically complex designs for mass production, he is best known for these high-tech products, including radios and televisions for Brionvega; cars for Mercedes-Benz, Fiat, and Pirelli; tableware for Alessi; furniture for Castelli and Knoll; and the Tizio lamp for Artemide.
