Arne Jacobsen
(1902-1971)
Arne Jacobsen stands out as one of the premier Danish architects and designers. Before even graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts' School of Architecture in 1927 he had begun to receive both awards and recognition for his work. Early influences included the Bauhaus and the work of Le Corbusier, and soon he had established an international reputation in furniture design. Among the world's best-selling pieces of designer furniture in the latter half of the 20th century were his chairs: The Ant, The Egg, and The Swan.
Mr. Jacobsen ranks as a master of modern architecture through masterpieces such as the Royal hotel (1956-61) in Copenhagen. It also underscores his interest in creating contextual details down to the smallest element; for the hotel he created furniture, lamps, cutlery, glasses, and even door handles.
During the 1960's his focus turned to such basic forms as the circle, cylinder, triangle, and cube. This design exploration led to new and unique tableware, most famously the Cylinda-Line, and the "AJ" lamp series. Common to all of Arne Jacobsen's designs: they are all international design classics.
