Product Description

Miniature Bell 47D1 Helicopter Toy

The miniature helicopter toy was inspired by the Bell-47D1 Helicopter, which is in MoMA's collection. Arthur Young, who was also a poet and painter, juxtaposed the one-piece plastic bubble with the open structure of the tail boom to create an object whose delicate beauty is inseparable from its efficiency. With an insect-like appearance, the Bell-47D1 Helicopter is nicknamed "the dragonfly" and the "bug-eyed helicopter." The helicopter can reach a maximum speed of 92 miles per hour, and can hover like a dragonfly at altitudes up to 10,000 feet. More than 3,000 helicopters were made in the US and sold in more than 40 countries between 1946 and 1973. It was used to deliver mail and cargo to remote areas, for traffic surveillance, and for pest control. Ages 8 years and up. 2h x 5.3w x 1.3"d
