Product Description

Aalto Vase

The word aalto is Finnish for "wave," and in the 1930s Aalto captured the eternal wave in his classic series of vases. Long included in the MoMA design collection, these now-famous undulating Aalto Vases are masterpieces of free-form modern design. Made by Iittala of lead-free crystal mouth-blown into a mold and hand-polished. Hand-wash only.

History

Scandinavian Design

Scandinavian design became a major international influence in the mid twentieth century as it blended a strong history of hand craftsmanship, unpretentious form, and utilitarianism with the tenets of the modern movement. Favoring organic shapes and natural elements, new designers continue to carry on the tradition with light, user-friendly furniture and products.

About the Designer

Alvar Aalto

Finland's foremost architect-designer of the twentieth century, Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) continues to have a profound influence internationally and was the subject of a 1998 exhibition at MoMA. He was involved with projects ranging from town planning and architecture to the design of furniture, lighting, textiles, and glassware. Aalto advocated the use of natural materials and organic forms, as evidenced in his famous series of free-form vases and bentwood furniture designs. In his major architectural projects, his furniture designs played an important role in creating harmonious environments.
