John Szarkowski: Photographs (HC)
John Szarkowski, Director Emeritus of MoMA's Department of Photography, is one of the most influential photography curators and critics of the twentieth century. A photographer of great achievement in his own right, Szarkowski's lifetime of artistic work is given the attention it deserves in John Szarkowski: Photographs, a retrospective exhibition on view at MoMA Feb. 1-May 15, 2006, and in this accompanying catalogue. The catalogue features 84 tritone images of Szarkowski's early photographs, beginning with pictures of his native Midwest dating from 1943 and continuing through his later works, many of which were made around his farm in upstate New York. Informed by a humanist sensibility, they depict the lived landscape, both urban and rural, and impart a sense of history, place, and the way Americans once regarded the land.
