Edvard Munch: The Scream

Norwegian painter and printmaker Edvard Munch (1863-1944) experimented with naturalism and impressionism early in his career before moving toward an unprecedented exploration of modern existential experience. His most prominent works, including The Scream (first created in 1893), reveal a struggle to translate personal trauma into universal terms and, in the process, comprehend the fundamental components of human existence: birth, love, and death.
