NelsonTM Swag Leg Desk
George Nelson, 1958
In typical George Nelson style, the design brief for what would become the swag leg group was deceptively simple: "Wouldn't it be beautiful to have some kind of sculptured leg on a piece of furniture?" Then came the challenges. Make the legs of metal, machine formed and prefinished. Design them for quick assembly. His answer came in a method called swaging, using pressure to taper and curve a metal tube. Inserting a screw in the legs and rotating them in opposite directions made quick work of assembly.
In 1958, everything came together in this desk, sized right for the home. It offers colorful cubbyholes for organization, with one slot large enough for a 15" laptop. It also features two molded drawers and a grommet for cord management. The desk is made of wood, laminate, and aluminum, and requires simple assembly. Legs feature adjustable glides for a level work surface. Made by the Herman Miller® Company.
