Untitled (Condoms)
Daniel Martinez, 1990

Daniel Martinez is a Los Angeles-based multimedia artist whose work unapologetically probes complicated issues of personal and collective identity. In 1993, Martinez gained notoriety for designing Whitney Biennial admission tags that read, "I can't imagine ever wanting to be white." A provocateur who embraces humor, Martinez has worked with text, image, video, sculpture, and performance in his disparate works.

For this piece, Martinez created a project to tie in with "A Day Without Art," the annual December tribute to people who have died from AIDS-related causes. The piece consists of packages of multicolored condoms in a plastic case surrounded by the slogans, "We will not tolerate institutionalized religion," "We will not tolerate racism," "We will not tolerate forced morality," and "We will not tolerate government censorship." Condoms not intended for use.
