Product Description

Plane Image: A Brice Marden Retrospective (HC)

By Gary Garrels. With essays by Richard Shiff, Brenda Richardson, and Carol Mancusi-Ungaro, and an interview with the artist by Michael Duffy

Brice Marden won acclaim in the 1960s and '70s for luminous monochrome panels, at first in a subtle palette of grays and muted hues, then in brighter, richer colors and ambitious multicanvas combinations. In the mid-1980s he began to paint calligraphic markings embedded in shimmering grounds, and in the past decade his work has again taken on more heightened color. This volume accompanies the artist's first full retrospective, at MoMA in the fall of 2006. Offering the first opportunity to view the development of Marden's work from the early 1960s to the present, this gathering of over 170 paintings and drawings, ranging across his entire career, beautifully demonstrates the evolution of his explorations of color, surface, and light. Includes 260 color illustrations.
