Product Description

The Egg™ Chair

Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen designed the Egg™ for the lobby and reception areas in the Royal Hotel, in Copenhagen. Jacobsen, whose work is represented in the Museum's collection, was commissioned to design the hotel building and its furniture, allowing him to execute his vision of integrated design and architecture. The Egg is a sculptural contrast to the building’s vertical and horizontal surfaces, and its unique shape provides the occupant with privacy. Jacobsen employed a new technique to make the chair, using a strong foam inner shell underneath the upholstery. Made of polyurethane foam with glass fiber reinforcement, a steel tilt mechanism with a polished stainless-steel handle, and a star-shaped base made of satin-polished aluminum.
