Sandy Chilewich cofounded the hosiery company HUE in 1978, which was recognized as revolutionizing the legwear market with innovations in design and merchandising. After launching her own design studio in 1997, she introduced the RayBowl at the MoMA Design Store. Featuring a metal frame covered with stretch netting typically used in lingerie, it incorporated a simple, inventive mechanism to hold the fabric in a concave plane.
Later, Chilewich incorporated woven vinyl into various home and personal accessories, inspired by the material’s durability, design versatility, and practicality. Chilewich placemats and floor mats, as well as bags, totes, and cosmetic bags remain favorites, and Ms. Chilewich’s continued innovations make it likely that the trend will continue indefinitely.
