Product Description

Eames® Molded Plastic Armchair with Rocking Base (RAR)

Designed in 1948 by Charles and Ray Eames, and first presented at The Museum of Modern Art in the International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture, the Molded Plastic Chair was the first plastic chair to be mass-produced. The work of the Eames design team is included in the Museum’s collection, and has been featured in numerous exhibitions throughout MoMA’s history. The current models are an exact reproduction of the originals, with a clean, simple form that is sculpted to fit the body. They are made with recycled and recyclable materials. The rocker base is made of stained-maple runners. Made by Herman Miller.

About the Designers

Charles Eames & Ray Eames

Husband-and-wife design team Charles (1907-1978) and Ray (1912-1988) Eames were among the most influential designers of the twentieth century. Their landmark contributions include furniture, architecture, film, and graphics. They were pioneers in the molding of plywood, which was developed from their experiments and projects for the U.S. Navy. Their association with the Museum goes back to 1940, with a joint entry with Eero Saarinen in the MoMA competition "Organic Design in Home Furnishings." Since then nearly 100 examples of their work have entered the Museum's design collection.
